Our Promise

The study of communication is considered one of the oldest existing disciplines of higher education. The study of communication and speech dates back to the times of Aristotle, Isocrates, and Cicero. As early as 2,400 years ago, the Greek as well as Roman and Chinese leaders realized the importance that communication plays in society and defining one's success. Each elite culture placed special emphasis on the art of verbal persuasion and argument. With such importance placed upon communication knowledge and skills still existing today, the value of a Communication Studies degree is easy to see!

Aristotle

Aristotle was a Greek Philosopher who wrote on many subjects, including logic, rhetoric, politics, government, and ethics.

Cicero

Cicero was considered by many one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists.

Socrates

Socrates was a classic Greek philosopher who is credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy.

A California study of Fortune 500 companies showed that formal training in communication was essential for management success. In fact, according to Fortune 500 executives, oral communication skills were considered even more important than written communication skills. Still another study identified listening, resolving conflict, public speaking, planning and conducting meetings, and interviewing skills as the most essential skills for competent employees. All of which are basic talents developed by students in the Communication Studies major and minor.
