Proudly Introducing Edgewood's Newest Undergraduate Degree!

The Communication Studies Program!

Our Mission

We, the faculty in the Edgewood College Communication Studies Program, strive to give our students the priceless knowledge essential to fully understanding communication through excellent teaching offered in a caring, constructive environment.

Our Promise

As a Communication Studies major or minor, you will have the opportunity to learn the essential communication theories and physiology of spoken and mediated communication. Students can find their own voice, learn how people talk, why people communicate, how to listen, and how better to persuade. In addition, our students will study the history and structure of argument, the nonverbal aspects of communication, and the intercultural challenges of communication. As a result, our students will graduate prepared to survive in the professional world, and quite capable of sharing their knowledge!

Our Track Record

Although new to Edgewood College, the study of communication is considered one of the oldest existing disciplines of higher education. The study of communication and speech dates back to the times of Aristotle, Isocrates, and Cicero. As early as 2,400 years ago, the Greek as well as Roman and Chinese leaders realized the importance that communication plays in society and defining one's success. Each elite culture placed special emphasis on the art of verbal persuasion and argument. With such importance placed upon communication knowledge and skills still existing today, the value of a Communication Studies degree is easy to see!

A California study of Fortune 500 companies showed that formal training in communication was essential for management success. In fact, according to Fortune 500 executives, oral communication skills were considered even more important than written communication skills. Still another study identified listening, resolving conflict, public speaking, planning and conducting meetings, and interviewing skills as the most essential skills for competent employees. All of which are basic talents developed by students in the Communication Studies major and minor.
